Why Wars, Marriages, Wallets and Storms Blow Up
Quick Answer
The mechanism that turned a moderate earthquake into a catastrophe in Mexico City and marched Europe into war in 1914 also shows up in kitchens, bank accounts, theater audiences, traffic jams and hurricane seasons. Any system with feedback, where each response feeds the next, will amplify on its own once the coupling passes a threshold. Nobody decides to escalate. Everyone makes the locally sensible move and the loop does the rest. Understanding that shape says more about how to stop these disasters than good intentions ever will.
The Pattern
Resonance in physics needs two things: a system that responds to a push, and pushes that arrive in time with the response. Get both and energy piles up. Human affairs have no frequencies, but they have the same structure. The physicist Lewis Fry Richardson wrote it down for arms races in the 1930s as a pair of coupled equations. Steven Strogatz and others later showed that coupled oscillators of almost any kind will synchronize spontaneously above a threshold. It is not a choice. It is a phase transition, which is why these loops are so hard to exit from inside.
Applause, Traffic and Crowds: Sync Without a Leader
Start small. In 2000 a team of physicists recorded audiences in Romanian and Hungarian theaters and found that scattered applause spontaneously locks into rhythmic clapping within seconds, with no conductor. Then, as the crowd speeds up, the sync breaks and dissolves back into noise, and the cycle repeats. Nobody in the hall is doing anything but clapping a little in time with the neighbors. The rhythm belongs to the room.
Traffic jams do the same thing. In 2008 Japanese researchers put 22 cars on a circular track and asked drivers simply to keep a steady speed. Within minutes a jam appeared out of nothing, a wave of stopped cars rolling backward around the track at about 12 miles per hour. One driver braked slightly, the next braked harder, and the loop was born. Every phantom jam on I-4 with no accident at the front of it is this experiment at scale.
The deadly version is a crowd crush. Above roughly five people per square meter, a crowd stops behaving like people and starts behaving like a fluid. Pressure waves travel through it. Someone pushes to get breathing room, the push propagates, others push back, and the compression grows. The 159 people who died in Seoul’s Itaewon district on Halloween 2022 were not trampled in a panic. They were squeezed by a feedback loop in a narrow alley, and most of them were standing up when they died.
Wars: The Loop Nobody Chose
July 1914 is the textbook case because the coupling was so visible. Russia, Germany, France and Austria each had mobilization timetables that only worked if started before the other side’s. Every partial step by one power forced a full step by the next. On August 1 the Kaiser actually tried to break step, ordering the army to halt its western deployment and turn east. His chief of staff told him that a million men and eleven thousand trains could not be reversed. The one man nominally in charge could not change the frequency.
The damper, when it finally appeared, came from outside the loop. In October 1962 Kennedy and Khrushchev ran the public confrontation and the real negotiation on separate tracks, using a back-channel through the Soviet ambassador so that neither side’s visible moves fed the other’s. Eight months later the two governments installed the Moscow-Washington hotline, a literal damper bolted onto the structure. In 1983 a Soviet duty officer named Stanislav Petrov decided on his own authority that a launch warning was a glitch and did not pass it up the chain. He was right. Both cases are remembered precisely because stepping outside the loop is so rare.
Divorce: The Reactive Marriage
Psychologist John Gottman spent decades filming couples argue and found that the best predictor of divorce was not how much they fought but whether they had locked into a reactive cycle. He called the worst version negative reciprocity: one partner’s criticism triggers the other’s defensiveness, which reads as contempt, which triggers stonewalling, which reads as abandonment, which triggers a sharper criticism. Each move is a reasonable response to the last one. Together they are a runaway.
Andrew Christensen documented a related loop, demand-withdraw, across cultures. One partner pushes for discussion, the other pulls back, the pushing intensifies because of the pulling, the pulling intensifies because of the pushing. It is the Millennium Bridge in a living room.
Timing decides the outcome. Stable couples in Gottman’s data had roughly five positive interactions for every negative one, so a bad moment landed on a cushion. In failing couples the ratio approached one to one and every bad moment landed on the last one. What breaks the loop is what Gottman called a repair attempt, a joke, a touch, a “let me start over.” It is a damper. Critics have noted that Gottman’s famous prediction accuracy was partly fit to data after the fact, but the underlying pattern has held up in decades of replication.
Being Poor Is Expensive: The Compounding Trap
Terry Pratchett put it best through a fictional police captain: a rich man buys a fifty-dollar pair of boots that last ten years, while a poor man buys a ten-dollar pair every year and spends more over the decade for worse boots. The “Vimes boots theory” is a joke that economists now cite seriously, because it describes a feedback loop.
Without a cushion, every shock lands on the last shock. A car repair means a payday loan. The loan’s fee means a missed utility payment. The late fee means an overdraft. The overdraft closes the account, which means check-cashing stores at a percentage. A thin credit file means higher interest on everything, which keeps the file thin. Buying groceries in small quantities costs more per unit. Living far from work because rent is cheaper costs more in fuel and hours. None of these costs is large. They are coupled, and they arrive in the worst possible order.
Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir added a second loop in Scarcity: financial stress measurably consumes cognitive bandwidth, lowering performance on reasoning tests, which produces worse decisions, which deepens the scarcity. They found the effect in the same Indian sugarcane farmers before and after harvest, when the only thing that changed was money.
Bank Runs and Flash Crashes: Money Moving in Step
A bank run is pure coupled oscillation. Every depositor’s decision to withdraw depends on what other depositors are doing, and the sensible individual move, get your money out first, is exactly the move that makes the fear correct. In March 2023 Silicon Valley Bank lost $42 billion in deposits in a single day, most of it after a few venture capitalists told their portfolio companies to pull out and the message spread through group chats. The Federal Reserve’s own post-mortem noted that the speed had no precedent. The coupling had simply gotten faster.
Markets do it at machine speed. On May 6, 2010, the Dow fell roughly a thousand points in minutes and recovered most of it just as fast. The regulators’ report traced it to one large automated sell order that other algorithms responded to by selling, which triggered more selling, until the programs were trading the same contracts back and forth among themselves. The damper installed afterward, circuit breakers that pause trading when prices move too fast, is the financial version of the shock absorbers on the Millennium Bridge.
Blackouts: A Tree Branch and Fifty Million People
On August 14, 2003, a power line in Ohio sagged in the afternoon heat and touched a tree. The line tripped. Its load shifted to neighboring lines, which sagged further under the extra current and touched their own trees. A software bug meant the control room’s alarms were silent. Within about an hour the cascade had rolled across eight states and Ontario, and 50 million people were in the dark. No single failure was serious. The grid was a coupled system running near its threshold, and the failures arrived in exactly the order that fed each other.
Weather: Storms That Feed Themselves
Nature runs the same loops with no humans involved, and Florida lives inside the most important one.
A hurricane is a heat engine with feedback. Warm water evaporates, the vapor rises and condenses, condensation releases heat, heat lowers surface pressure, lower pressure pulls more air across warm water, more evaporation. Kerry Emanuel at MIT worked out the theory in the 1980s, including the threshold: below roughly 26 degrees Celsius the engine will not start.
Rapid intensification is the loop running away. Ian did it in 2022 before hitting Southwest Florida. Milton went from Category 1 to Category 5 in about a day in the Gulf in 2024. The National Hurricane Center has said plainly that rapid intensification is one of its hardest forecasting problems, for the same reason nonlinear resonance is hard in engineering: once feedback dominates, small differences in inputs produce very different outcomes.
Wildfires now do something even stranger. A fire large enough heats the air above it until it builds its own thunderstorm, a pyrocumulonimbus, which produces lightning that starts new fires and winds that drive the old one. Fires in Australia in 2020 and Canada in 2023 generated dozens of these storms. The fire was manufacturing its own weather.
Heat domes and droughts run quieter versions: a high-pressure ridge clears the sky, the clear sky bakes the ground, the hot ground strengthens the ridge. Dry soil evaporates less, less moisture means less rain, less rain means drier soil.
What the Loops Have in Common
Strip out the details and every one of these systems has four parts.
Coupling. Each party or process responds to the other. Spouses, depositors, drivers, ocean and air.
Timing. The response lands while the previous one is still peaking. Fees on fees, brakes on brakes, heat on heat.
A threshold. Below it the system absorbs shocks. Above it, shocks compound. Five positive moments to one negative, five people per square meter, 26 degrees of sea temperature, one sagging power line too many.
A damper, or its absence. Something that interrupts the loop from outside: a repair attempt, a circuit breaker, an emergency fund, a hotline to Moscow.
This is not metaphor for its own sake. It is the same mathematics, coupled equations with a stability condition, and it produces the same signature every time: things go wrong slowly, then all at once, and afterward everyone involved insists that no single decision was crazy.
The Hopeful Half
Feedback is not the villain. It is also compound interest, skill that builds on skill, a marriage where kindness triggers kindness, a reputation that earns opportunities that build reputation. The loop does not care which direction it runs.
That is the practical lesson. Breaking step inside a runaway loop almost never works. The Kaiser could not do it with a million men, a depositor cannot do it by staying calm alone, and a couple in full escalation cannot do it with willpower. What works is keeping the coupling below the threshold before the loop starts, and building dampers while things are calm. The engineers did not lecture the pedestrians on the Millennium Bridge. They bolted shock absorbers to the deck and reopened it. Most of the loops that ruin lives could use the same treatment: less moralizing about the people caught inside them, more attention to the structure they are standing on.
